A Hidden Betrayal

The Last Supper is a late 15th-century painting by Leonardo da

Vinci. With strong colors and small details, it conveys the feelings of

Jesus and the Apostles after, according to the Bible, Jesus declared

that one of his followers would betray him. The religious theme is

common amongst paintings of its time period, but what I think makes it

really stand out are the small details. One aspect that stood out to me is the spilt salt in front of Judas

(the traitor, wearing blue with dark skin and positioned three spots to

the left of Jesus). Spilt salt has been a classic sign of bad luck, and

including it in this painting really adds depth to the scene. Another important detail is how Jesus is positioned alone in the

middle, showing how he is already losing trust in his followers and

how he is unsettled by the danger he predicted. This creates a sense

of eeriness and sets Jesus apart from everyone else, even though he

is in the center of the painting. Finally, one last important element is the bag of coins in Judas’

hand, and when combined with his expression, shows that he is

feeling remorse about his betrayal but still holds on to it like he could

lose it at any time, helping viewers understand how the traitor himself

reacted to the announcement. In summary, The Last Supper is a fabulous painting with many

hidden features that help bring the image to a whole new level.
