The Mindset of an Artist
A few weeks ago, at the MusicOn+InterArts Festival in New York City, I
was given the chance to interview several artists (including judges and
composers). I am very grateful for this opportunity and what it has given me, so
today I will share some important knowledge with you too. One young man I interviewed had composed a piece with three sections,
each with its own distinct theme. When questioned, he said that for one of the
pieces, the main sound, a repetitive thump, was inspired by one of Edgar Allan
Poe’s stories. A classic Gothic tale, The Tell-Tale Heart tells the story of a person
who murdered someone else. From my conversation with the composer, I had
learned that literature can be great inspiration, as some stories contain imagery
so strong you can almost experience it yourself. Another person I interviewed was a girl who created an imaginative image
of her bedroom. I noticed that a prominent color featured in her art was purple,
and I immediately decided to ask her about it. She said that even though it wasn’t her favorite color, she really liked purple and thought it was calming. Purple has been a symbol of many different things, and I think it could also represent creativity, as the vibrant hues contain a lot of energy and the darker tones give off a considerate vibe. After talking with the young artist, I learned that simple things can be interpreted many ways. I learned a lot of things at the Festival thanks to an opportunity to interview,
and I hope sharing my knowledge will help everyone vastly improve their creative expression.
